Brenden’s Birthday Weekend.
Brenden turned 2 on Saturday (April 23rd). Grandma and Grandpa Hughes, Shelly, and Wendy made the trip from Chicago to spend the weekend celebrating.
Saturday was the party, and Sunday, we relaxed, talked, and played “Don’t Spill the Beans”, “Don’t Break the Ice”, and Imaginiff…”. All very fun.

Small Group Spring Party. We had our Small Group Spring Party on Thursday at the Marions. John used his new grill to cook us up some tasty beef. Other activities included:
- Morbid ruminations on death scenarios.
- Sinfullly delicious choclolate cake (thanks Laura!).

Hugo Chavez.
Let them read Quixote. “The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has printed one million copies of Don Quixote to mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of Cervantes’ novel. This week they are being handed out free in public squares for the improvement of his citizens, while at the same time our politicians are also on the streets distributing material of infinitely less literary merit.”

Details Emerge. Details Emerge of How Benedict Became Pope. “Orthodox Catholics have cause for great celebration,” said William Donohue, president of the U.S.-based Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. “Those who are not delighted need to do some real soul searching.”≡ 21 Apr 2005

Robot Camel Jockeys: Part II. I recently posted an article on the announcement of the use of Robots for Camel Racing in the middle east. Today, the associated press released an article with some photos of these robots. You can see that article here, and the slideshow here.≡ 20 Apr 2005

Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Benedict XVI Elected today. All indications are that this pope will be just as conservative as the last (which I view as a good thing). From the article: “[…] his papacy is sure to continue John Paul II’s strongly traditional interpretation of the Catholic faith, including opposition to abortion, homosexuality, priestly marriage and women priests.”≡ 19 Apr 2005

Monday Night Football moving to ESPN. Monday Night Football will be moving to ESPN, and NBC will get Sunday Night Football. Also, it’s rumoured that this also means that MNF will be moving to basic cable, instead of network TV. Looks like I might need to cough up $10 jing, and get basic cable.≡ 18 Apr 2005

Kintana, the Madagascan Aye-Aye Lemur.
The Bristol Zoo in Britain is announcing the birth of Kintana, the second aye-aye Lemur to be born and hand-reared in captivity. This story is partly interesting because it doesn’t happen very often, and party interesting, because the aye-aye Lemur is so fricken’ weird.
Here’s the BBC article. Here’s another photo from National Geographic of the little fella’

The Sheldon’s Are Back. Our friends Steve and Nicole Sheldon are back from their around-the-world trip and are staying with us for a few months. We’re so excited to have them back. They returned on Thursday, April 7th. The next day (Friday), to welcome them back, we threw a BBQ at our house. Here’s some pictures from the BBQ and a couple additional pictures from last night when Steve made us some cooked vegatables in oyster sauce—Thai style. Quite tasty.≡ 13 Apr 2005

Technical Writing Resources. Today, I found some great resources through MIT OCW on Technical Writing, and Technical Communication in general. The MIT course that contains these references is 21W.732-2 Intro to Tech Communication. The course is self-described as “[…] a basic introduction to the practice of technical writing for those who work as scientists and technical researchers.”≡ 13 Apr 2005

Robot Camel Jockeys. Camel Racing is a big sport in the United Arab Emirates. Unfortunately, many of the jockeys are enslaved children as young as 4-years old. The BBC is reporting that over the weekend, a prototype of a robot was successfully tested that would replace these child-jockeys.≡ 11 Apr 2005

No Kaka Please. Today, I went to lunch with two co-workers. On our way there, we had to pick up a car in the Designer’s Guild parking ramp in Minneapolis’ Warehouse District. While we were walking up the stairwell of the ramp, we came across a garbage can with this sign posted on it.≡ 8 Apr 2005

The Commentator. This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while. My friend Matt sent this to me. The Commentator from Cenqua (the makers of Clover, Clover .NET, and PairOn for Extreme XPers), is a real-time language processor that groks your code and adds comments.≡ 8 Apr 2005

Mental Arithmetic Record. Alexis Lamaire, a 24-year-old French student, found the 13th root of a 200 digit number in 48 minutes and 51 seconds using only mental arithmetic. The answer was a 16 digit number, and the use of a computer, calculator, or even paper and pencil were not allowed.≡ 7 Apr 2005

Dentist. Have you ever had a dentist, while working on you, stop abruptly and say “oops”? Twice? Well I have, and this is my story. I went to the dentist a few months ago for a check up and found that I had to have a cavity filled. My dentist Dr. Colazi calmly started with the normal routine by injecting a little Xylocaine (like Novocaine) in to the back of the inside of my cheek. The instant he finished emptying the syringe and pulled it out, and said “oops”.≡ 6 Apr 2005

Miami Master’s Series. Roger Federer held off Rafael Nadal at Miami this weekend. At one point in the match, Federer slammed his raquet to the ground. That’s not really Federer’s style, and I hate to see pros throwing tantrums like that.≡ 4 Apr 2005

Schiavo Family Feud. It’s sad to see how the Schiavo Family Feud continues even after her death. Honestly, I don’t know what to think of it all. One one hand, I think we have to be very very careful to discontinue one’s life. It seems counter-moral to do anything but try to sustain life. On the other hand, if someone has specifically stated that they wish not to live as a vegetable… who’s in a position to tell them they aren’t allowed to have that freedom?≡ 1 Apr 2005
